Burning Party

I'm sorry but I have to do an entry on this. Have you heard about this whole let's pass a law that would make it illegal to burn the American flag business? Are we in Nazi Germany all of a sudden? Now we're going to make laws that FORCE people to be patriotic?

I was raised to respect America and it's principles. Now, that means that I don't always get along with what the leaders of our nation decide to do, but I still support the freedom that this country stands for. Not because I am forced to, but because America has earned my respect. If I didn't like it here, I could go somewhere else, or I could try to change it. But I do not support a law that basically tries to force respect on the citizens of this fine country. What's next, a pro-flag flying law? Or a law that requires you to put one of those window flags in your car? Or a law that says we should burn those people who aren't patriotic in giant ovens...anyone hear Hitler or Stalin calling?

Here's what I propose we do: hold a "we're not going to burn the American flag but we maintain that we should have the right to do so" party. We have tables covered with American flags, bigs ones and those tiny ones, and beside those are lighting devices ranging from zippo lighters to chimney match sticks to torches. Then we explain to anyone who wants to know that although we respect the flag and would never burn it, we also respect that this is a country that let's us make the decision to be patriotic.

That's all.
